This folktale focusses on two friends, Gamuli and Amuli, who travel around with the hope to find a husband for themselves. When they get to a mountain, Amuli prays for the wind to kill Gamuli, but he kills her instead. Saved but alone, Gamuli continues her journey and soon comes across a house inhabited by an old woman and her son.
Recording: Udihe videos were recorded by Maria Tolskaya, some with participation of Elena Perekhvalskaya, in 2006 in the village Krasnyy Yar and in 2011 in the village Agzu.
Note: A shorter version of this tale is published in Simonov et al. (1998: 146-149), but in that version there were three girls. The character’s name Amuli is probably etymologically related to the word ‘amu ‘garment made of fish skin’.
