We looked well: indeed it was ginseng with four leaves.
Посмотрели хорошенько, правда, женьшень с четырьмя листьями.
"Sefije" is a Chinese word denoting a ginseng plant with four leaves. First-year seedlings produce one compound leaf with three leaflets. The plant develops more leaves, with more leaflets, each year until the fourth or fifth year. A mature plant has 3 or more leaves, each consisting of 5 ovate leaflets. The old Udihe who hunt for ginseng plant still use Chinese names for it such as pocanza ‘a plant with one leave’, edäza ‘a plant with two leaves’, deŋtaiza ‘a plant with three leaves’, seifije ‘a plant with four leaves’, u:fije ‘a plant with five leaves’, lipije 'a plant with six leaves'. The latter do not occur often.
