I am starting. I know one story. At the edge of the village, at the edge of the town poor people lived. They lived and lived. They did not catch game, they did not catch fish. They lived, the poor people lived. They lived, of course, eating a little something. It seems they went to the tsar. One day a baby was on its way. A baby was on its way, the wife said: “I’m going to have a baby.” The husband said: “My God! There’s going to be a child, what shall I feed it with?” Then the wife said: “Why are you crying, are you afraid? He is our flesh and blood, he’ll have something to eat.” They lived on. As they lived, they had nothing, they had no place to sleep, they had nothing, they just lived. What they earned, what the tsar gave them, they ate.

Fine. They lived together for a long or a short time, a little grandson had been found, a companion for talking, she would talk with him, she lived with him. The boy grew to be healthy and strong, he went outside, started to run around outside. “You,” she said, “don’t run far, play by the porch. Do you see anything?” “Nothing,” he said, “there are little insects on the tree.” “What kind of insects?” “Little birds and magpies,” he said. “Well,” she said, “don’t go far. Stay near the porch and then come back.” “Why should I go far?”

This old man lived there maybe, maybe he lived somewhere. While the squirrel was crying, it thought: “In the times of the Khanty people the demons killing us or someone else will find us.” At the time she saw him, the old Russian man was an Khanty, a person with a fur coat. Then she saw that the old man came in a Russian cap and said: “Children, lie down and sleep. You mustn’t go around at all during the night. Keep quiet.” With the best efforts of these people it turned out well for all, they lived well the whole time.
