There lived a man named Palchik, a short man and his friend, Dog Ear. Dog Ear said: “Come on, let’s go hunting.” He said to Dog Ear: “I won’t go.” Dog Ear said: “I won’t go either, my mother is sick.” He was sitting in front of Palchik and the mother said: “Go, why shouldn’t you go, there are so many animals in the woods. There’s nothing to eat, there’s no meat.” Dog Ear set off. It was not Dog Ear who set off, but Palchik.

She tired out, tired out, there were no more shavings, she took she took the bottom of the last bandage and tied it around. The shavings also got soaked through with blood, she unwound it and the blood stopped. No more blood came. She felt her head become heavy. She shook her head, her eyes and lay down to sleep. She fell asleep. She slept for a long or a short time and woke up, she drove sleep away. Where is such a noise coming from? Or is it a puppy yelping?–but she had no dog. Or is it the whining of some small child?

So, they take the dead body and dress it, they start dressing it. They put the boots on, the coats, the parkas, they put everything. If there are extra boots, they boot them too. They put cups. They put everything that they have. The old boots, the new boots, everything. They put it in the coffin and take to the forest. They take it to the forest and cook porridge from the good big sack, make a pot, make tea, then put out the cups. They kill reindeer of the person with reindeer. They kill his dogs. They leave his sledges. Whatever there is, they leave it. Let it be man or woman, they dress the dead body like a living person. Let is be a dress or whatever, they put everything.
