Once there lived a muskrat. There lived a muskrat, spring came. In the sun at the cliff ice floes were floating. The spring water had come. It had to take its children. It took the nest with the children and put it out into the warmth of the sun, into the sun. It put it out and sat down at the edge of the water, it was sitting at the edge of the water, it was sitting next to its children in the nest. They were still young, naked animals. An old flat ice floe floated past. The muskrat said to old man ice floe: “Grandfather, farther away from the banks, farther away! Don’t shatter my children’s home.” Old man ice floe came nearer on purpose and cut off the muskrat’s legs. “Oh, the devil take it, old man ice-floe, I wish you no luck. There will be sunshine and you will melt away, we won’t see you anymore. You have wounded me now and left me without any legs. I have become an invalid.”
