The beginning of the tale I have is like this. Once there lived an old woman. Alone in a sacred spot in the woods. She lived in a little wooden house, no one lived with her. No human voice was to be heard, she heard nothing. She lived in a lonely spot, on a lonely piece of land, in a lonely house. An old woman. After a long or a short time she thought: “My shavings to dry my hands, to wipe off pieces of dirt, to wipe the dust, all are gone. I’ll go out to my brook, to the Khaslam brook. I’ll cut wooden shavings from pieces of sticks to wipe up dirt.” At that time there were no rags to wipe hands, only shavings. She took an axe and tied up her belt. The old woman went off to the Khaslam brook. She chopped wooden sticks and cut up as much as she could lift, as much as she could lift. She cut up rose willow.

Fine. He waited, he sat there, he went out and came back in. All of a sudden he heard something. From outside one could hear a man coming on skis. A young man entered the house. His belt was hung with animals, he had killed so many. “Oh, grandfather,” he said. “You’ve come, greetings!” “Greetings.” They greeted each other, had something to eat and the hunter skinned his animals and hung up their skins. They ate and drank. He lay down. The old man pretended to sleep. He thought: “He killed animals all day long, he was hunting, he has fallen asleep and is snoring.” The old man thought: “If I were to kill this young hunter, these animal skins would remain for me. I would take them home to my wife. I will bring so many skins, my wife will have good words for me.”

He begged her for a short time or a long time and the third time she said: “Well, if you really want me to with all your heart, put your head here on my knee.” War-Arrow Spirit, Death-Arrow Spirit put his head on his wife’s knee and his wife ran her fingers through his hair, searched, but found nothing. “There’s nothing,” she said, “as long as we’ve been living, I’ve searched and found nothing, should I find something today? There’s nothing.” “Fine,” he said, “then tie up your belt, throw on your fur coat, tie on a kerchief and go to father, to the old man with the hundred relatives. Ask him for an endless horse hair, for an endless cow hair.” The wife said: “Before, as long as we lived, I looked at your head and didn’t find even one little blood-mouse. You say offensive words, you say insulting words. Now look, what words you said to me.” “Fine, go on,” he said, “don’t listen, get dressed and go.”
