He took a seat, too, and all four of them set off together. They went and went noiselessly. They came to the filed of the man from the rich town. He went about in the forest and found a herd of wild reindeer. I was not very big, maybe six or seven. He found a herd. The herd of wild reindeer rushed to him. The youth thought: “My parents say that there are no wild animals in the forest, no fish, but it appears there are wild animals and fish in the forest.” Well. He caressed the animals, caressed them all. He caressed them for a short or long time, they all became completely used to him. Just as if they were a tame herd. The animals were at home around him. They lived like that. The animals bore young. The animals gave birth to little ones and they grew. This man of tales, the man of songs grew big. He grew big, he already looks like his father. Once there lived a muskrat. There lived a muskrat, spring came. In the sun at the cliff ice floes were floating. The spring water had come. It had to take its children. It took the nest with the children and put it out into the warmth of the sun, into the sun. It put it out and sat down at the edge of the water, it was sitting at the edge of the water, it was sitting next to its children in the nest. They were still young, naked animals. An old flat ice floe floated past. The muskrat said to old man ice floe: “Grandfather, farther away from the banks, farther away! Don’t shatter my children’s home.” Old man ice floe came nearer on purpose and cut off the muskrat’s legs. “Oh, the devil take it, old man ice-floe, I wish you no luck. There will be sunshine and you will melt away, we won’t see you anymore. You have wounded me now and left me without any legs. I have become an invalid.”
