So, fine. That’s the way it was. Just as the miracle before, they did a miracle. Bare heads remained again. The bare heads kept on. When the grandmother’s grandson’s head rolled under the demon’s hammer, the demon could be heard. The demon had such a big hammer that when he lifted it the sun was covered. The day became dark. When the grandmother’s grandson’s head rolled there, he could hear: “The iron nowadays is so hard. If I hit it, I miss. If you hit old iron, it bends.” Oh, the town hero’s son’s head also rolled there. The demon lowered the hammer on that side. The demon hit and the hammer missed. After the hammer fell there, they rolled for a long or a short time, they rolled, the grandmother’s grandson’s head fell to the opposite side of the path. But it kept on rolling. His head. The demon was talking again, and hit the empty spot, the empty spot again. “Ah,” he said, “iron nowadays is so hard. When you hit old iron, it bends.”

Once there lived an old man Kuzma. His name was Kuzma. He was completely alone, he had no one. He had no wife, the poor devil, he had no wife, he was all alone, he had one horse. In the summer he cut grass for the horse. He cut and cut and then sat down to smoke a pipe. He arranged a rope on his knees. He smoked his pipe. Mosquitoes bit his head, his bald head. He had no hair. He smacked his head with his hand and the mosquitoes rolled down onto the rope. He counted them, all of twenty mosquitoes. He smoked his pipe.

There lived an elder brother and a younger brother. The elder brother was rich, had a wife, had a hundred horses. The younger brother had no wife. He lived alone in a house. He was poor. His aunt was poor, they lived together. They had one horse, only one horse. That is how they lived and after a long or a short time the younger brother’s horse sickened and died. The horse died, he remained with nothing. The horse died, what can you do? He skinned it, took it and hung it on a cross-beam to dry. He thought: “I’ll go to my brother’s and ask for a horse for transporting water, for transporting fire-wood. Maybe he’ll give me one. He’s got a hundred horses.”

Then the young hunter-grandson entered the house. He went in, too, and stood in the doorway. In the house some sort of woman was sitting, an old woman. She was sitting between nests of sable, nests of skins. “Husband,” she said, “have you come?” “Yes, I have come,” he said. He listened, the old man was standing in the doorway. “Husband,” asked the woman, “husband, I can see a wound on your neck. It must be the work of the grandfather.” Again she asked: “Husband, I see that your shoulder on the heart side is cut and sliced right through and there is a wound. This must also be the work of the grandfather. Husband, I see you were all in pieces, your flesh was all in little pieces, your flesh was burnt by fire.” “That, too,” he said, “was the work of the grandfather.” The woman threw a glance in the direction of the old man. The old man collapsed on the spot where he stood. Whether he went below earth, whether he went below water, up to now nothing has been heard of him, for so long.

The pot started to boil, they came to eat, but the liver was already gone. They thought: “So, the hell with it.” Old man Sawas went out again, the next day he went and the Por women bewitched him again. They bewitched him again, they came there, some kind of animal meat, they dragged everything there. They came a second time, but he did the same thing. He carried off the pieces of meat, they remained without anything.

Once when it got light in the morning, the tsar ordered: “Bring my daughter’s ring, tie it up on top, on the top of the tree, whoever gets to that ring and takes the ring, will be my daughter’s bridegroom.” Then Ivanushka thought: “I will mount my bad horse and will go there, too.” Ivanushka led his horse out and his old father said: “So, and where are you going on such a bad horse?” Ivanushka mounted his mare and set off.
